K-5 Coding Contest

Activity Description

The first-ever K-5 Coding Contest! A competitive event where k-5 students compete to solve programming problems within a specified time frame.

Kansas State University is thrilled to announce the K-5 Coding Competition, taking place on May 2nd, 2024, from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm at DUE 1117 Engineering Hall. This year's event topic, inspired by the ARISE NSF project (Adaptive and Resilient Infrastructure driven by Social Equity), focuses on resilience issues such as water, electricity, transportation, and weather. Children in grades 3, 4, or 5 will utilize a block programming language through the ScratchJr platform to bring their ideas to life. Judges will meticulously evaluate the quality of students' projects and select multiple winning teams. Three outstanding teams will be chosen as winners and rewarded with prizes. The purpose of this event is to encourage collaboration, innovation, and community engagement among young learners, empowering them to make meaningful contributions to their surroundings by providing them with the opportunity to engage in a coding contest tailored specifically for K-5 students to nurture their curiosity, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities from a young age.

The Contest details

Contestants must be in grades 3, 4, or 5 within the Manhattan School District. This year, contestants are from the Boys and Girls Club in Manhattan, Kansas.

Block programming involves using visual blocks to create code sequences, making it accessible for beginners to learn programming concepts.

ScratchJr, specifically designed for young children, is a block-based programming language and platform that enables kids to create interactive stories and games by snapping together graphical programming blocks. It encourages creativity, problem-solving, and logical thinking in a fun and engaging way.
